Breaking news : our budding reporters’ newscasts are online

par Sabah Ghodbane

For this project, our budding journalists had to follow the methodology and principles of digital journalism to create, edit and broadcast their original news reports. They learnt how to identify credible sources but also how to read critically in order to write their own stories. Once their reports written, with the help of our English assistant, Clare, and a twist of techie magic, they created some pretty neat news bulletins you can watch here : https://padlet.com/safiamira1/you-are-the-reporter-h8dek4q8as7cpodd

First step of the project : in pairs, the students had to choose a topic they wanted to cover. As you will see in the padlet, the reports cover a wide range of authentic stories like politics, sports, cinema, economics, fashion or science. Then, each group had to identify credible sources and engage in inquiry by looking at things from multiple perspectives. After completing a grid in the methodology sheet, they had to analyze and think critically the information they found.
After that, they worked together to write a short newscast with each student responsible for his or her own role/report.
Their scripts had to include the newscaster language and follow the usual scenario of a news bulletin. Once their text ready, they practiced the newscast with Clare, our English assistant, until they could deliver the news comfortably and fluently with little reference to the script.
Have a look at their reports here and feel free to comment on any issue that you care about.

Stay tuned !
